The World According to Kinky Friedman

Staging the Kinkster

Songwriter, humorist and winless political candidate Kinky Friedman has achieved a peculiar through-the-looking-glass fame.

Playwright Ted Swindley ( Always ... Patsy Cline) has penned the play Becoming Kinky: The World According to Kinky Friedman.

Next month, in advance of a full-scale production, Kinky himself will be in the audience for a staged reading at the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek.

Actress Ruth Buzzi, her husband, Kent Perkins, a sometime adviser to Kinky's political campaigns, and Houston society beauty Carolyn Farb are co-producing the play.

They're also staging the Oct. 17 reading and Sunday brunch at the Mansion. "We'll get you out in time to watch the Cowboys game," says Carolyn.

Kinky will attend with his longtime Sancho Panza, Little Jewford Shelby, co-founder of the band Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys.

"Becoming Kinky: The World of Kinky Friedman

ONE OF my favorite people is Kinky Friedman. This Texas phenomenon, who ran for governor and should have been elected if the Lone Star State’s voters had any sense, has his work back on the boards.

Over the past two days here in NYC, there were readings of Becoming Kinky: The World According to Kinky Friedman. It happened at the June Havoc Theater. This was a conjunction with the Midtown International Theater Festival. Becoming Kinky was written by Ted Swindley, who also wrote Always … Patsy Cline. I bet this collection of Kinky-isms hasn’t seen its last performance. Like the man himself, this show will return!
